What is ISO 14064?

ISO 14064 provides internationally-recognized guidance for the quantification, monitoring, reporting, validation and verification of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals.

  • ISO 14064-1: Organizational-level GHG inventories (scope 1, 2, and relevant scope 3).
  • ISO 14064-2: Project-level GHG activities — baselines, monitoring, and quantified emissions reductions/removals.

We maintain rules governing references to our verification and validation opinions, reports, marks and logos. Clients must adhere to:

  • Opinions or reports must be communicated in their entirety if made public (ISO 14065:10.3.3).
  • Marks, logos, and labels shall not be used in a way that misleads intended users or impairs our reputation.
  • References must only relate to the validated/verified claim and shall not imply product certification.
  • All references must ensure traceability back to our body and the issued validation/verification statement.

Q & A

Validation assesses forward-looking claims (e.g., project estimates, baselines and methodologies) for reasonableness. Verification assesses historic or reported data (e.g., organizational inventories) for accuracy and compliance with stated criteria.

We offer Reasonable assurance (higher confidence; more substantive procedures) and Limited assurance (moderate confidence; targeted procedures). The choice depends on the client’s objectives and stakeholder expectations.

Materiality defines the threshold where misstatements or omissions could influence intended users’ decisions. Only issues above the materiality threshold must normally be corrected for a positive opinion.

Typical outcomes:

Unmodified opinion – where there are no misstatements, non-conformances or caveats that the intended user needs to be aware of in relation to the statement/claim.
Modified opinion where misstatements, non-conformances or caveats that the intended user needs to be made aware of exist but are not material, in relation to the statement/claim.
Adverse opinion where the existence of material misstatements or non-conformances are identified, or insufficient information of evidence has been supplied to enable BSI to conclude that no material misstatements or non-conformances exist.
